G is for Green

The flag of Brazil
There was an answer on the game show JEOPARDY! recently (2010, Jan 27)- IT'S NO WHITE $1000: According to Webster's, the serpentine shade of this color is "paler than citrine".
The question was "What is green"? I had no idea. (I guessed yellow.)

I'm a Roy G. Biv kind of guy, that, of course, representing the main colors of rainbow. You know, yellow and blue equals green; the basic stuff.

But in fact, I do there are lots of gradations of green. I'm also aware in the color spectrum as used in HTML, that colors are "defined using a hexadecimal (hex) notation for the combination of Red, Green, and Blue color values (RGB)".

Flag of Norfolk Island, "tax free haven of Australia"
I've always been fascinated by flags. For flags, green can symbolize the Earth, agriculture, fertility, and/or the Muslim religion.

Before our child was born - and we never knew the gender until she was born - we categorically eliminated some names from consideration:
Olive Green
Kelly Green
Forest Green

And since my last name IS Green, I get to list some of my favorite green things:

Vermont: the nearby Green Mountain state

M&Ms and, specifically, Tegan's continuing green M&M challenge.

Monopoly: one of my favorite board games features little green houses

Green Goblin: favorite villain in my favorite comic book, Spider-Man

The Green Lantern/Green Arrow comics of the mid-1970s.

Going green: the 3 Rs of reduce, reuse & recycle

Greenwich Mean Time: longitude and time are reckoned by the prime meridian

Green Eggs and Ham: An editor bet that Dr. Seuss could not write a book using 50 words or less; he lost. It's Dr. Seuss' birthday today!

Naturally, the music:

Al Green-Take Me To The River
Creedence Clearwater Revival-Green River
The Lemon Pipers-Green Tambourine
And finally, the song that's been sung by Frank Sinatra, Audra McDonald, Van Morrison and countless others, but never better than by the amphibian: Being Green-Kermit the Frog.

Great choice :) Kermit is of course my favourite green person, I've always had a thing for frogs. And I would love to see some more green when I look out of the window, but I guess thast'll have to wait.

Roger, A very enjoyable post for sure. I believe serpentine is a green rock but I "citrine" is a new one for me. I like the Brazilian flag - so colorful!

We have "Olives" in our family, but I never connected the name with green before. And I LOVE Al Green, always have!

Big smile on my face, Roger as I read through this post! And little green apples? Let's not forget those too. But, heck I NEVER would have thought of "What is green?" to that Jeopardy answer!!

Roger..thank you for correcting the age of Dr. Seuss in my post. I did read it correctly and typed it wrong. There is a lot of wisdom in his writings and he is an important guy in our house. You really outdid yourself on your post.. a great job. I see you are in Albany... spring is on it's way. I hear the birds singing. What a winter it has been.. Michelle

Oh my. I don't know where to begin! you certainly captured just about all the personalities of green! I love Kermit (but not as much as Elmo) and the "divine Ms. M" is my favorite M&M character.

I spent quite a while wandering around your place this morning and would like to add you to my "break in the day reads." May I?

Denise- Aw, shucks!
Dina- I had actually forgotten it was Dr. Seuss' birthday until my wife had me copy a couple pages of One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish - stuff about the Nook hook cook book - as part of her lesson plan.
Stan- yes, jealousy is green, but NOT necessarily a positive attribute, which was what I was going for.
Gordon- well, you can trade in those green houses for the red hotels. Yes, tidier and more profitable, but worse if you hit the luxury tax.
Lisa - oh, yes, you certainly may! Thank you.

It's not easy being green. :) Interestingly, to me at least, in France they have planted a Green Meridian from Dunquerque to Barcelona. It was to mark the millennium.

Another song, the Irish - '40 Shades of Green' and I'm sure there are more than that even in Ireland.

A wonderful selection of all things green! I love this bit -

Green is in, Green is good.

I once did a post with a photo of the Brazilian flag. A Brazilian adult student in my ESOL class brought it in to talk about it. Thanks to soccer, all the little primary school boys recognise it as well.
