I have nothing particularly pithy to say. New Orleans, which thought it had dodged a bullet, is devastated by weather, infrastructure failure and human behavior. The gulf states are facing damage in terms of life and property that we won't really know the extent of for days, as officials frantically try to rescue what's salvageable. So, I've decided, and maybe you'll decide, to donate to the Red Cross.

So, how to do this that might work to maximize the effort among folks reading this? How about this: I will give $1 to the Red Cross for every person going to my blog - they don't even have to read it, though obviously I wish they would - between now and the end of Labor Day (Monday) at 10 pm EDT. (The counter is at 144.) The challenge is for every blogger and web person to do something similar. The need is extraordinary.

I thought the list of items was instructive, not just for this disaster, but the next one: Mission Central Requesting Flood and Disaster Relief Materials for Projected Hurricane Response

With Hurricane Katrina pounding the Gulf Coast and projected to move northward delivering large amounts of rain, we are gearing up for an immediate response when called upon by UMCOR and other ministries that will be participating in the cleanup of homes and other support of displaced people. Therefore, we are asking for immediate help with Flood Bucket supplies, Health and School Kit supplies, and men's, women's, and children's clothing (all clothing must be new or in excellent condition (no men's suits, women's fancy dresses, evening ware, high heeled shoes, purses, and similar "dress-up items" for men, women or children. Underwear may be provided if new.

Flood Bucket contents are as follows:
5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
Bleach (two 1-quart or one 82 oz. bottle. Do not include bleach of you are shipping the bucket through the US Postal Service, UPS or FedEx)
5 scouring pads
7 Sponges
1 scrub brush
18 cleaning towels (reusable wipes)
Liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle)
1 household cleaner, 12-16 oz. bottle
Disinfectant dish soap, 16-28 oz. bottle
50 clothes pins
Clothes line (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.)
5 dust masks
2 pair latex gloves
1 pair work gloves
24-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33-45 gallon (remove roll from box before placing in bucket)
1 Insect repellant spray, 6-14 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have protective caps. See special requirements below.*)
1 Air freshener, 8 or 9 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have protective caps.

Health and School Kit ingredients (as well as Flood Bucket ingredients) may be found by going to, click on "Information" and then select "UMCOR Kit Ingredients".

Hi there! While out blog surfing today for specific info on wedding planning, I ended up on your page. Your site shows that I ended up a little off base, but I am certainly glad I stopped by. I will bookmark your site for a future visit, and should you ever need it, there is plenty of information on this site about wedding planning.
